Maria Massaad
In her surreal, charged oil paintings, Maria Massaad (Lebanon, 1999) tends to unacknowledged wounds, rendering the inner world through a network of intertwined vessels that guide the viewer from one scene to another, like veins or roots circulating life between organs.
In a world where silence, escapism, and denial are often preferred, Massaad approaches painting as a process of creating a route to the wound, a form of dissection. Understanding the self demands a willingness to cut beneath the surface and confront what lies within. Her biomorphic forms and unsettling landscapes operate as a terrain—psychological, spiritual, or real—where boundaries between interior and exterior can dissolve. In this space, truth can emerge, whether as a low whisper or a piercing scream.
